How We Rate Casinos?

Plenty of casino affiliate websites out there claim they deposit and play in each online casino they review or that they only list the best ones. The truth is that often they do not - many affiliate sites simply publish online casinos that give them the best deals. Also, not many comparison websites do it the right way; they mostly just read other reviews, change a bit of the wording, and post them as their own.

At Casino Owls, we want to give you the best possible value. That’s why we never write positive online casino reviews without playing there. Instead, our team deposits real money and tests it at casinos. If it fits our criteria, it’s published. There are no strings attached—this is our honest process to ensure we deliver the best choices for our visitors.

Keep in mind that we never accept money from online casinos for the listing or a given position on the list. We make money through affiliate links, but this never influences our rating. If you want to learn more about our review policy and how we rate casinos and online gambling sites, keep reading.

Who Is Behind The Casino Review Process?

Casino Owls is run by a group of casino experts and ex-poker pros. We get paid for playing (testing) casino games – what’s not to like? It’s like having the best job in the world and getting paid for it. Let’s get a bit closer to our team members.

He has been working in the online gambling industry since 2013, and he knows pretty much everything there is to know about it. Dan started as a poker player back when there was a golden age of online poker and made his way up to running a successful casino affiliate website. He tests and reviews Canadian online casinos. George Fletcher

UK Country Manager

An ex-croupier, George worked for many years in land-based casinos before getting into the online business. He’s a firm believer that the key to playing is having a good strategy. When he’s not testing and writing about UK online casinos, George is a passionate poker player and a tennis fan.

Our Casino Review Process - How Does It Look Like?

  • 1

    Establish Availability

We create a list of sites in Excel that possibly offer fast payouts based on our research and players’ feedback. We then check the availability of each online casino for Canadian & NZ players.

  • 2

    Testing Process Begins

We test each gambling site on the list with actual money. We usually deposit £/$20-50, play different casino games for a while, request a withdrawal, and track the time it takes for us to get our winnings.

  • 3

    Check Payment Methods

We check the payment methods for each country separately. We examine if there are any fees, what is the minimum and maximum deposit/withdrawal limits are, how long it takes to process the withdrawal, and so on.

  • 4

    Test Customer Support

We test the customer service of the online casino as well. We contact them anonymously via email, live chat, or sometimes even phone if it is available. We ask them several questions about the withdrawal process, deposits, promotions and other topics to see how professional and helpful they are. This is also to ensure they are not bots but real people who know the answers.

  • 5

    We Go Even Deeper

If everything looks good so far, we will test even deeper. We check the T&C for each site and make sure there are no hidden fees or some sick wagering requirements. Bonuses are also checked thoroughly since we don’t want you to get tricked by some shady offers. But that’s not all – we test many other things as well, but we are going to explain more in detail in a separate section below.

Collecting Data & Writing The Review

The last step is to list the gambling site where applicable and put all the data we have gathered into a review. We list all the pros and cons, describe the customer support, bonus offers, payment methods and, of course, the speed of the payments.

The whole process, from depositing to adding a casino to the website, takes 14 to 18 hours, which is why we can only test and review a few sites each month. Still, we are proud that we can provide our readers with the most accurate and up-to-date reviews of gambling sites available in Canada and New Zealand.

We Keep Changing The Scores

Scores are not permanent. Once every 2 months, we revisit all sites we’ve listed and check if the payout speed, customer service, or anything else has changed. If it did, we update our reviews accordingly.

We also want more interaction with our readers, so if you have experienced playing at any of the sites we reviewed, please share your feedback and help us keep our reviews up to date. We try to do the best we can , but we can always improve, and your opinion really matters to us.

A Closer Look To The Criteria

We’ve given you a general overview of our casino review process, but now let’s take a closer look at all the criteria we use to evaluate each gambling site. This list is quite long, so bear with us.

License & Security

Unlicensed casino sites are a big no-no. Playing at such dodgy sites is not only illegal but also highly dangerous. That’s why we always check if the online casino has a valid license from reputable agencies like the UK Gambling Commission or the Malta Gaming Authority. We check the security measures as well, including SSL encryption or firewall protection.

User Experience

We take our time to explore the website and study its user interface. We closely examine how easy it is to find games, bonus offers, and payment methods, and how fast the KYC process is. We even take our mobile phones and check the responsiveness of online casinos.

Game Selection & Quality

We also pay attention to the game selection and quality. Having a lot of games is not enough – we want to see if there are enough varieties of popular titles like slots, blackjack, and roulette. We also test if the games are provably fair and have an RNG certificate.

Bonuses & Promotions

The bonuses and promotions are also checked, obviously. We look for no deposit offers, welcome packages with the lowest wagering requirements as possible, various ongoing promotions, and more. We also strive to provide our readers with low minimum deposit casinos. Most players like to play with little money, and our goal is to find the best options for them.

Payment Methods & Speed

There is no point in listing an online casino if it doesn’t have enough banking options tailored for the Canadian  or New Zealand markets. We check the accepted payment methods, processing time, and fees. Deposits and withdrawals must be fast and without fuss. Our maximum payout time is 24 hours; everything above that is unacceptable.

Customer Support

An online casino needs friendly, helpful customer support that can help players with any issues. We rate customer support by testing it ourselves, likemails (or live chats) and asking some random questions. We also check the FAQ section to send a few and see if it’s comprehensive enough.

Want To List Your Online Casino on Casino Owls?

Who doesn’t want to be listed on our site? We accept applications from established brands and new casinos that provide a good player experience. We will test your site anonymously to ensure fairness and avoid bias in our reviews. As long as the online casino follows our strict criteria and has a valid license, we are more than happy to add it to our list.

So, if you feel your online casino meets these requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always eager to add more gambling sites and provide our readers with a wider range of options.

What About Unlicensed Sites?

We will never list any unlicensed or scam casino sites out of respect for our visitors. We would feel ashamed to recommend shady online casinos, so please don’t even bother sending us offers.

Our goal is to provide safe, secure, and fair gambling environments for all players, no matter the location or platform. Unlicensed sites are a huge risk, and we don’t want anyone to get hurt while gambling online. The online casinos that we test and review need to have at least one valid license from a reputable jurisdiction, like:

Red Flags We look For

We always look for potential red flags when testing an online casino. We know that rogue operators use all kinds of tricks to fool players, so we are extra careful while assessing a site. The most common red flags that we pay attention to include:

  • No license
  • Unfair bonus terms and conditions
  • Lack of payment options for certain countries
  • Long payout times
  • Negative feedback from players
  • No games from popular software developers
  • Other language versions translated using Google Translate.
